In Spring 2024, I had the honor of co-designing and co-facilitating Punto Urban Art Museum’s first Mural Ambassador Program, a six-week cohort that trains residents to lead guided tours highlighting the murals and deep cultural legacy of The Point “El Punto” neighborhood in Salem, MA. Yolanda Fauvet and I instructed bilingual (Spanish and English) workshops in which participants as local experts reflected on Salem’s history, shared their stories, and identified and critiqued visual art. Residents who successfully complete the ongoing program are offered paid opportunities to lead educational tours for PUAM, with the goal of amplifying residents’ voices, engendering pride, and bridging communities.
