With support in part by a Mass Cultural Council STARS Residency grant and Beverly Cultural Council grant (and as a former BHS student and Beverly, MA native myself), I worked with a group of AP Studio Art and advanced art junior and senior students to co-design and install a hand-painted mural at Beverly High School. In February 2023, I led three consecutive workshops to identify the mural creation process, develop ideas, and critique and refine a design that reflected the visions, interests, and voices of the students. In discussing initial concepts, it was a general consensus amongst the group of twenty students that athletics are widely overrepresented through the school's mascot and branding. They were particularly interested in using the opportunity to shine light on other departments, including the arts, music, and theater. We also integrated images to represent JROTC, the LGBTQ+community, and ASL, among others. Students were then invited to participate in the hand-painted application of the mural over the course of two weeks.
